surface Pro & surface RT laptops
The surface RT tablet is finally available for purchase, consumers an alternative to the iPad and the fourth Nexus 7 to enjoy a completely new user Metro. Not all devices are very happy, but with a little already thinking about picking up the surface Pro version in following year.
If you are not already aware, Microsoft announced two versions of the Surface Pro – the RT version with a tablet version of Windows 8 and the Surface Pro, which comes with Windows 8 Pro and support for actual PC applications. The app compatibility issue is becoming a problem for some users, as they’ve realized that none of their favorite applications work with Surface RT.
Then again, Microsoft made it perfectly clear that the Surface RT was a tablet that was designed in a way to offer the same core experiences that other tablets offer on the market – browsing, using Skype, checking emails and so on. But because its a Windows device, some naturally assume it can run every PC application under the sun and if that is the position you’re in – you’ll need to get the Pro in January.
Microsoft has said it will be available around three months after the RT, but has so far declined to offer a solid release date – just in case of any production problems that may arise we expect. The Pro is going to be equipped with a dual-core Core i5 processor instead ( RT ships with an ARM-based chip) and double the RAM (4GB), than what the Surface RT currently offers.
More importantly though, the Pro version will give you the full Windows 8 compatibility that you need and it should give you a better transition for those that want to use the Surface Pro as a replacement for a current Windows laptop. If the RT model costs $499 to buy though, how much more expensive is the Pro model going to cost?
We’ve seen whispers of a price tag close to $1000 emerging, but obviously a lot of consumers are going to feel that this is simply too much to pay for a device that needs to be competitively priced to take on all tablet newcomers in 2013.
As a top buyer RT, as you have with your camera ready? Do you regret buying a tablet because of compatibility issues, or are you just happy to use the device for general purposes?

Thin laptops, including MacBook Air, meet eco-standard
An investigation of ultrathin laptops, including Apple's latest MacBook Air, has found they do conform to the EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) environmental standard. The investigation, which covered five laptops made by four companies, was started after Apple said in July it was withdrawing from the voluntary certification then reversed its position after an outcry from its customers.
The Cupertino-based computer maker never explained its initial reason for wanting to drop out of EPEAT, but the move came shortly after it refreshed its MacBook Air laptops. At the time there was considerable speculation Apple's decision was because the new laptops didn't conform to aspects of the EPEAT standard related to disassembly, upgrade and replacement of components.
As a result of the verification process, details of which were announced on Friday, no products have been removed from the EPEAT registry, said Sarah O'Brien, director of outreach and communications for EPEAT.
One of the issues in question was EPEAT section 4.4.2.1, which in part required that "the product is upgradeable with commonly available tools."The organization's verification process began with an attempt to clarify ambiguous wording in a couple of parts of its requirements, which are based on the IEEE 1680.1 environmental assessment standard for personal computers.
In determining what that meant, EPEAT decided that an upgrade doesn't necessarily require access to the inside of the computer.
"Products containing externally accessible ports such as a high performance serial bus or a USB are capable of being upgraded by adding a hard disk, DVD, floppy drive, memory and cards, and therefore conform to this criterion," EPEAT's product verification committee said in a clarification to the rule.
A "commonly available tool" was determined to be one that can be "purchased by any individual or business without restrictions and is readily available for purchase on the open market."
A second issue requiring clarification was the definition of the "ease and safety" disassembly requirement in two other parts of the EPEAT regulations. The committee decided that was something that had to be demonstrated rather than explained in the text of the document.
The verification process started wide but soon narrowed.
"In reviewing, we found a large number of products with clear disassembly instructions, then we looked at the uni-body group," said O'Brien. "There was a high risk of non-compliance."
Unibody refers to a new form of laptop manufacture in which the body of the computer is formed from a single piece of metal or plastic. The method makes the computers more compact, but has the possibility of making them more difficult to take apart and recycle.
So EPEAT decided to focus its attention on unibody laptops and selected five computers from Apple, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba.
Disassembly instructions were solicited from the manufacturers, the laptops were bought on the open market, and they were sent to an electronics test laboratory that would do the tests.
"They found they could disassemble all the laptops in at most 20 minutes and remove batteries in at most 3 minutes," said O'Brien. "The recommendation was that all five [laptops] be found in compliance."
Batteries had been a focus of the initial speculation on Apple. Early attempts to disassemble Macbook Air laptops revealed the batteries were glued into space rather that mounted—something that would enable the company to save a little internal space—and that was thought to fall afoul of EPEAT standards.

GM: Explosion at battery research facility ‘unrelated to the Chevrolet Volt’
An explosion during "extreme battery testing" Wednesday morning of a prototype energy cell at a General Motors battery research facility in Warren, Mich., injured one person and did major structural damage to the building.
At the heart of the explosion was a lithium-ion battery, according to a fire department official cited in local news reports. The morning blast did not, however, involve batteries that power the Chevrolet Volt, the new plug-in hybrid car whose batteries caught fire weeks after a crash test, General Motors said in a statement.
But the flap over the Volt battery fire has left some insiders feeling more than a little peeved and defensive at the amount of news media attention being devoted to what they say is an almost inevitable, if not routine, event in the business of battery research and extreme testing.
"The whole reason they have these labs is precisely to do this kind of aggressive testing – anticipating the worst thing a consumer could do with this product," says one expert with direct knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the explosion, who asked not to be named. "This is going to turn out to be a mountain out of a mole hill. Yeah, we're doing a lot of testing. That's what we have to do. Sometimes things explode."
“The incident is still under investigation by GM and the Warren authorities," the GM statement said. "Any information or discussion of the nature of the work in the lab or cause of the incident is entirely speculative and cannot be confirmed at this time. The incident was unrelated to the Chevrolet Volt or any other production vehicle. The incident was related to extreme testing on a prototype battery.”
Despite criticism of the Volt by conservative pundits, a follow-up investigation by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration concluded the new car was no more prone to fire than any other vehicle.
"The debate over batteries recently really hasn't been about safety so much as about their longevity," says Tom Turrentine, director of the plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle research center at the University of California, Davis. "I think we are mostly over the hump with battery safety. But there's no question that battery labs are notorious for explosions when they're testing."
Lithium-ion batteries are attractive to automakers because they can hold so much power – about four times the amount of energy a conventional lead-acid battery. Even so, earlier lithium-ion batteries used in other commercial applications burst into flame on occasion. Laptop computer manufacturer Dell Computer recalled millions of batteries after a handful of its laptops burst into flames several years ago.
t's a peril automakers were well aware of. Automakers now building the Volt and other first generation plug-in vehicles that run primarily or exclusively on advanced lithium ion batteries have selected less-volatile battery chemistries – and added engineering safety features as well, industry experts say.
Robert Kruse, GM's then-executive director of global vehicle engineering for hybrids, electric vehicles, and batteries, explained his thoughts on emerging plug-in hybrid vehicle battery technology in a 2009 interview with the Monitor. On safety, cell chemistry, and to avoid "thermal runaway" in which lithium ion batteries have been known to burst into flames, "many layers of safety built into the Volt," Mr. Kruse said.
"We have adopted [independent] safety standards and have employed those requirements into our cell and pack designs. I can assure you we've met those standards with what we've designed."
Vehicle makers like GM are now on the hunt for new battery chemistries that hold a lot more energy than today's lithium ion battery, but are also less volatile. But it's a hunt fraught with occasional explosions.
"The challenge of the battery designer is to come up with a high voltage battery, but one that doesn't suffer from instability," says Donald Sadoway, professor of chemistry and an authority on new battery technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "If you have a high energy battery, that means you've got a lot of energy inside that case and you can, in an unabated release, end up with thermal events or, in an extreme case – an explosion."
Ann Marie Sastry is CEO of Sakti3, a next generation company that GM has invested in to produce a cutting-edge source of power for future vehicles that would far exceed conventional lithium ion batteries.
"Intensive testing is required right now to validate the technology for use by consumers," Dr. Sastry writes in an e-mail interview. "But, there are disruptive technologies coming down the pike which will obviate some of these challenges. So the today solution is to test, and the tomorrow solution is to productize the next generation technology, and that's why we are partnered with GM – they're taking the right approach."
Though not discounting the seriousness of any battery explosion, Dr. Sadoway says it's still much more dangerous to be near a gasoline explosion of equivalent energy value. Indeed, there were 184,000 vehicle fires in 2010 involving conventional gasoline-powered vehicles that killed 285 people and cost $1 billion in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
"If I had to choose," he says, "I would rather be present when a battery that explodes – rather than a car whose gas tank explodes."

The Smart Connect Technology -Dell XPS 13
The Dell XPS 13 ultrabook is the first system we've seen to showcase Intel's Smart Connect technology. But what exactly is Smart Connect? We break down the seven most important things you need to know about this new Intel technology.
What is it? Intel Smart Connect Technology is a feature of select (Intel estimates 25 to 30 percent of) ultrabooks, such as the Dell XPS 13. The chipmaker anticipates it showing up in other laptops and desktops as well—any Intel system that can be set to sleep or standby mode instead of being switched off when idle.
What does it do? Smart Connect periodically wakes the system from sleep or standby (not from hibernation) and updates applications that get their data from the Internet, fetching, for example, Microsoft Outlook or Windows Live Mail messages or Facebook status updates. When you return to and reawaken the PC, the fresh data is waiting for you—so you can not only pick up where you left off, but pick up up to the minute.
Has anything like this been available before? Not really. HP business laptops have offered QuickLook, a fast-loading alternative to booting Windows that offers a snapshot of Outlook information as of the last time the program was used, but that's for checking existing e-mails and appointments instead of receiving new ones.
How does it connect to the cloud? Smart Connect Technology checks to see if a trusted (i.e., previously accessed) Wi-Fi or wired network is available. If not—say, if you and your ultrabook are in transit between office and home—the system skips the scheduled update. When you walk through the door at home, Smart Connect recognizes your home WLAN and resumes operation.
How often does Smart Connect poll for data? The software interface lets you specify an interval from 5 to 60 minutes between updates, plus overnight hours (such as from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) during which the system checks less frequently (every two hours).
Doesn't it kill the laptop battery? While it draws more power than uninterrupted sleep, Intel says the impact is minimal, thanks in part to automatic overrides of the abovementioned intervals: As the battery runs down, updates occur less frequently, stopping when the battery level reaches 15 percent. Ditto if the system temperature is rising (if the laptop is in an unventilated bag or briefcase, for example, replacement Dell 05Y4YV battery).
Can Smart Connect be added to an existing laptop? Sure, especially one with an AMD processor and Atheros Wi-Fi card … no, no, it's strictly an Intel OEM offering, requiring not only a software layer but specific BIOS support and an Intel Core processor and wireless hardware.

Laptop Batteries'Problem
Laptop users getting the CPU core of the laptop, while the battery is the center of power as the blood. To support, with the power of the heart is no longer work. This is not an exaggeration. Due to its location, rarely notice the people its existence until he got problems.
Although some people below on this heavy stone, the CPU, memory, hard disk and so on are all supported by the battery. Without them is the laptop over a strike to occur. Everything that you work they should be stopped. On the market, there are many counterfeit batteries and batteries of inferior quality. If you can not distinguish between good and bad, your laptop by the low quality to suffer product.
You can of the notebook computer to hear little about the bad effects. for the low quality of battery, there are many bad consequences. These experiences came from the cases of counterfeit products.
1, has the hard disk bad track due to the capacity. This can be solved by software. If this occurs you, you can the battery. If the confirmation is a problem with the power supply, it should be by a reliable, stable new power supply will be replaced.
2, is the performance of the hard disk not well read dials. This situation occurs in the new computer or new drive. In addition to the drive fails, it is likely due to the battery problem. A friend used to have a battery in trouble. An expert checked and confirmed twice the battery problem, because in the lower power range.
3, the host often harassment to restart. This situation happens, the battery such as Acer DR201 battery, Acer DR35 battery, Acer GRAPE32 battery ,Acer SQ-1100 battery, Acer TM00741 battery. Due to the low power, which can results in system software error, hard drive, optical drive is not read and write, memory loss, etc., that make it to restart the notebook computer.
4, is accompanied by noise on the computer. At that time, problems generally arise in the power supply fan. There is much dust has the laptop makes fan noise increases.
When your laptop battery with these above problems. You should check your battery as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will result in greater losses. If you to buy, a new laptop battery be inferior product careful about that.

Laptop is the Best Suited for Personal Computer
You're like a blessing for the professionals, students, business people and the people, which still continue. Although desktop computers are equally efficient, laptops are more useful because they mobility, flexibility, portability, performance and cost effective to offer. However, if you want to buy a laptop, you must be aware, the computing needs, what be on the market available, brands and models of laptops. Read below, to about a few things you need to know to know when buying a laptop.
The most important thing before you decide, if a laptop, is your IT needs and requirements. What will you with your laptop for use? It will help you a budget for your laptop and features that you should be aware. For example, if your work involves only the use of Excel and Word and the Internet, you need not a high specification laptop. If you need advanced multimedia features, you need a laptop with high resolution, advanced graphics cards, memory, and much more. The difference in the properties will also create a big difference in household.
Once you determine your needs, you can post particular requirements in your laptop computer to look for. If you want a good laptop with basic functions, you should with a laptop at least 1.75 GHz-processor. If you want to have the latest Windows Vista, or more, you should store a laptop with 1 GB or more for your daily PC look. A 80 GB minimum hard disk space is always increasing number of advanced applications ideal, because you.
Another application, what kind of need, read the DVD combo drive, the DVDs and burn CDs. If you like to hear good music are, have a point to test the sound quality. If you are struggling to listen to the music, even if the volume is full have, it's not your kind of laptop. In addition, the Dell laptop battery keep to. Away like you with your laptop on the road or at home or in the Office, it needs to have a strong battery life, include this Dell INSPIRON 1525 Battery,Dell INSPIRON 6000 Battery, Dell INSPIRON E1505 Battery.
One more thing to consider is the image quality and size. Nowadays, there are laptops with different screen sizes. A matte display is preferred over the shiny screen. A wised aspect screen is best suited to work with settings such as image processing, Excel sheet, or watching movies. You can use from several popular laptop brands such as Dell laptops, Lenovo laptops and others. You can compare their features and prices, to determine the best laptop.
