LG Nexus 4 Price and Specs Unveiled

For quite sometime now Google has been expected to unveiled LG Nexus 4. The announcement of this product was supposed to be made at a special Google event which was cancelled due to hurricane Sandy. However mother nature has not deterred Google from making its announcements. The internet search giant has finally announced LG Nexus 4 specifications and features. This happens to be the fourth device that Google has added to its Nexus lineup of smartphones.

In recent months we have heard a lot of rumors regarding LG Nexus 4. We have also seen a number of leaked photos, and the device has also been leaked out recently in a hands on video. Nevertheless the device does not fail to impress and after being officially unveiled by Apple, we can now gawk on the wonder that is LG Nexus 4.

LG Nexus 4 Specifications And Features:
This device, born out of the union between LG and Google, is one powerful machine. Google states that LG Nexus 4 houses the most powerful smartphone processor, unrivaled by any other processor out there. It touts the fierce Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor with an impressive clock speed of 1.5GHz, coupled with 2GB of RAM. Providing power to this power-hungry setup is a 2,100 mAh battery, big enough for a talk time of 10 hours. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and NFC. There’s no support for LTE, for carrier dependent HSPA+, there is. It also has support for wireless charging.

There are some Android fans who are suckers for Samsung’s Super AMOLED HD displays, while others prefer devices with IPS LCD display panels. The LG Nexus 4 has a 4.7 inch IPS LCD display with an eye popping resolution of 1280×768 which equals to 320 pixels per square inch to 16:10 ratio. You’ll feel a noticeable difference if you’re switching from Super AMOLED HD to an IPS display panel because the latter is devoid of the grainy look seen in the former. The screen is curved at the edges which makes swiping gestures a lot easier.

LG Nexus 4 has an 8 megapixel back camera as well as a 1.3 megapixel front camera. The camera has been engineered for providing a better result in conditions where there is low light. LG Nexus 4 has a unique feature, it can take 360° panoramic photos, something which no other smartphone on the market can do right now.

LG Nexus 4 Price:
The LG Nexus 4 comes with two storage options, 8GB and 16GB, which are priced at $299 and $349 respectively. It will ship with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean by default. It has not yet been revealed when and where the LG Nexus 7 will be shipped first.

How Google’s New Tablet Stacks Up Against iPad, Surface

After years of 10-inch Android tablets that have failed to make a meaningful dent in Apple’s market-defining iPad sales, Google has taken matters into its own hands. With the new Nexus 10, the company behind the Android OS is finally pushing a large-sized tablet of its own, albeit one produced in collaboration with Samsung.

So now that the device has been unveiled, how will it stack up against the new fourth-gen iPad? And how about Microsoft’s Surface tablet, which seeks to add a bit of PC flavor to the tablet world? The competition won’t be easy, and Google knows that.

One major weakness for Android thus far has been a lack of tablet-optimized apps. To remedy this, Google is making a major push to get more of these apps from developers. But just how much the dev community is listening remains to be seen. Microsoft’s Windows 8 RT operating system has even fewer tablet-optimized apps. Future versions of the Surface tablet will be able to run traditional PC apps, but it’s unclear whether or not consumers want a keyboard-and-mouse desktop experience on a touch-friendly tablet. Regardless, for now, iOS still clearly dominates in terms of number of tablet-specific apps.

We got our hands on the Nexus 10 earlier today, and there is plenty of testing to be done before our full review. In the meantime, check out the main spec-sheet differences between the Nexus 10, the fourth-generation iPad and the Surface below to see how these tablets stack up against one another.

How Cramped Must This iPad Mini Bluetooth Keyboard Be?

If you’re using a touchscreen device for any kind of serious work, a physical keyboard is a must-have accessory. It’s no different for the new iPad mini, although at just 7.78 inches wide when used in landscape mode, this new Bluetooth keyboard case from Zagg is probably going to feel a little cramped.

In comparison, the 11-inch MacBook Air, the smallest laptop Apple makes with a full-sized keyboard, is a spacious 11.8-inches across. So with the ZAGGkeys Mini 7 you’re sacrificing about four inches worth of keyboard real estate, and for touch typists who expect the keys to always be in a certain spot, the cramped layout here is going to be an issue.

The better and cheaper option is probably still Apple’s own wireless Bluetooth keyboard, unless you like the fact that the $US90 Mini 7 case turns the iPad mini into a tiny makeshift laptop.

ipad mini give you a different feeling

The big reveal is here, and the result is something littler: Apple has introduced an iPad Mini. The new pencil-thin (7.2mm) iPad Mini comes a mere half-year after the third-generation iPad was introduced. Apple says it's as light as a pad of paper.

It will be priced at $329.

Is it different? The Mini has a 7.9-inch screen, measured diagonally (vs. 9.7-inches for the larger iPad, a new one of which Apple also introduced). That's wider than the 7-inch screens on the Kindle or Nexus 7, just big enough that I couldn't stash it in my inside coat pocket when I got a chance to briefly hold it at Apple's launch event. For what it's worth, I can fit the Google tablet in that same pocket.

The new screen has resolution of 1024 by 768, so all the software created for previous iPads will work. But it doesn't sport the sterling retina display that's on the latest generations of its larger sibling. Still, there's nothing you can do with the new iPad that you won't be able to do on the larger iPad, and vice versa.

What will Change Apple by iPad Mini ?

Apple sent out invitations for an event Tuesday in San Jose, California, keeping details under wraps as it normally does, saying only: "We've got a little more to show you."
Reports have been swirling for months about the "iPad Mini," but Apple has made no comment.
But blogs which closely monitor Apple say the new tablet could be priced from $249 to $399, which could pressure rivals such as the Amazon Kindle Fire.
The event comes a little over a month after Apple released the iPhone 5, the latest model of its iconic smartphone, which was greeted with record sales.
The October 23 gathering is three days ahead of the release of Microsoft's new Surface tablet and two days before Apple reports quarterly earnings.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that Apple has begun production of 10 million of the new iPads. Some reports say it may be available November 2.
Analysts say Apple is virtually guaranteed a hit on release, but that the long-term outlook is less clear.
"For Apple, given its well-oiled product marketing machine, 10 million is not a surprise," said Roger Kay, a consultant and analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates.
"They will also likely take some of the wind out of the sails of the others like Amazon."
But Kay said that although Apple essentially created the tablet market with the 10-inch iPad, it is making a "defensive" move with the new device, expected to have a screen of 7.85 inches (20 centimeters).
He said it is not clear if Apple will be dominant in that segment of the market, which has established products from Amazon, Samsung and others.
"Apple wouldn't have gone into this if others hadn't," he said.
"The bar has been set by Amazon. Even though the Kindle is not the same kind of device, it does what it does very well."
The Kindle Fire proved popular last year, and a new version was launched last month. Meanwhile the small-format Google Nexus 7 joined the Samsung Galaxy in the seven-inch tablet market.
Also in the mix will be Microsoft's Surface—a late entry in the market—which has a 10.6-inch screen and starts at $499, challenging the larger-format iPads.
With Kindles selling from $199, Apple will be forced to keep its price low for its new model and "will not have its normal profit margin," said Kay. And some blogs say Google may sell a tablet as low as $99.
Analyst Shaw Wu at Sterne Agee said the iPad Mini "is the competition's worse nightmare" but that sales will depend on how Apple prices the device.
"We do not believe Apple needs to price as low as $199 to match Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD but believe a price point of $299 or $349 makes sense," he said.
"The key question is whether Apple decides to price in-line with its margin model, or does it get aggressive to 'go for the kill' against competitors?"
Ben Reitzes at Barclays said the Mini may erode some sales of the larger iPad but will grow the market.
"We believe a smaller iPad could be useful in promoting Apple's agenda in education with e-textbooks," he said.
"Also, the form factor could make more sense for gaming."
Jack Gold, analyst with J. Gold Associates, said Apple needs to get into the small tablet segment to maintain its leadership.
"There is a perception in the marketplace that Apple has lost some of its innovation capability, and if they can come out with an iPad Mini that is groundbreaking, which will be hard to do, they can get some of that aura back," Gold said.
Gold said Apple will have to wow consumers with the new device to protect its turf.
"Apple is a premium brand and they want you to pay a premium price," he said. "The only way to sustain that is to offer what the others don't."

Google, Samsung Chrome laptop

Google is dangling a low-priced laptop computer in front of consumers as rivals Microsoft and Apple prepare to release their latest gadgets.

The lightweight computer will sell for $249 and is being made in a partnership with Samsung Electronics, which also makes smartphones and tablet computers that run on Google's Android software.

The laptop will run on an operating system revolving around Google's Chrome Web browser.

Like other so-called Chromebooks, this laptop doesn't have a hard drive. It functions like a terminal dependent on an internet connection to get to information and applications stored in large data centers run by Google Inc. or other technology providers.

It's the least expensive Chromebook that Google has released in the two years that it has been working on the product line. Google and Samsung released a slightly more sophisticated Chromebook priced at $449 in the late spring.

The lower-priced model will go on sale early next week in more than 500 Best Buy stores in the US, as well as on various websites. Google hopes to begin accepting online orders at its Play store by this weekend.

Google appears to be trying to beat Microsoft and Apple to the punch with the discount Chromebook.

Microsoft Corp. is poised to release Windows 8, a dramatic makeover of its famous operating system, on October 26. The long-awaited makeover is designed to run on touch-based tablets, as well as laptop and desktop computers. A variety of manufacturers will be selling a hodgepodge of Windows 8-powered personal computers and tablets. The prices of most of those machines, including a tablet made by Microsoft, will range from $500 to $1,000.

Apple says it plans to show off a new product Tuesday. The event is widely expected to be the coming-out party for a slightly smaller version of its hot-selling iPad.

The mini iPad is expected to feature a 7.85-inch screen compared to the nearly 10-inch screen of the pioneering iPad. Industry analysts expect Apple to price a smaller iPad in the $249 to $299 range in an effort to siphon sales away from other scaled-down tablets, such as Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon.com's Kindle Fire.

Now, Google has a laptop vying for a piece of the same market.

"This is a big step in the journey for us," said Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president of Chrome and apps. "I think it's generally an exciting time in the computing industry."

Like tablets, the discount Chromebook will rely on a computer chip design known as ARM, instead of Intel microprocessors. The ARM architecture is more energy efficient, extending the duration of batteries between charges.

With an 11.6-inch screen, the new Chromebooks also will have a larger display than tablets selling in the same price range.

The laptops will be set up to automatically use all of Google's services, including its search engine, Gmail and YouTube video site. Because the laptop lacks a hard drive, Google also is offering 100 gigabytes of free storage on computers kept in its eight data centers. Those remote computers provide the backbone for Google's online storage service, Drive.

Despite the low price, the new Chromebook will face a tough time winning over consumers because it isn't set up like a traditional PC with a hard drive, said Gartner Inc. analyst Carolina Milanesi.

"A lot of people are going to see it and think, 'Once I have it, what exactly do I do with it?'" Milanesi predicted.

Google, which is based in Mountain View, California, will try to educate and woo prospective buyers by setting up Chromebook kiosks in Best Buy stores where staff will be on hand to field questions. The company also will promote the new Chromebook in television ads.

The attempt to grab a few early headlines Thursday backfired, though, when Google prematurely released its third-quarter earnings while the company was providing a preview of the low-priced Chromebook to a group of reporters. Once the earnings slipped out, some reporters bolted from the laptop presentation to focus on numbers that disappointed investors.

Windows 8 Tablets will be The most successful tablets ever

Soon, you and users around the world will be able to purchase your very own Windows 8 Tablet computers. Though I haven't been lucky enough to review one yet, I feel as if they'll take the market by storm for one single reason alone: Windows 8. Tablets have been around for years. Windows has been around for years. Windows tablets have been around for years. So, what's so special about Windows tablets now? The answer is simply, Windows 8.

But, that's only the answer to the first part of the question. The answer to the second part of the question is, support.

Windows 8 and support. That's what's so special about Windows tablets now.

Why do I feel like Windows 8 is going to push tablet computing into the mainstream including corporate computing in such a big way?

First, Microsoft has many Enterprise-level partner agreements with its customers. That means that Microsoft's own tablet will be available in bulk for those customers, preloaded with Windows 8 that's ready for corporate work. You're looking at millions of units just for corporate use.

Second, it's Windows. Windows, like Mac, has its fans. Windows is familiar, it's well known by users, it's a recognizable brand. Everyone uses Windows. Everyone knows Microsoft will be there tomorrow and the day after that. There's comfort in that stability.

Third, people will use at home what they use at work. How many people will buy technology that they also use at work? A lot. Personal computers users want to become more familiar with the workings of their office environments and will therefore purchase accordingly. Similarly, if you use a Mac at work, you're more likely to purchase one for home use. People love consistency. Millions more units.

Fourth, a lot of consumers will buy into Windows 8 tablets because of its more tablet-friendly interface. Large icons and a swipey interface make it easier for people to use on this hardware. Previous Windows versions were mouse-driven. This one begs for a touch screen. And, it's more user friendly than Apple's iOS. Seriously. It's Windows plus you have the intuitive interface that begs to be swiped and touched. Apple's iOS can leave people a little confused. Task switching in iOS is not intuitive.

Finally, Microsoft's support is going to be long-lived. They still support Windows XP. That means that while your (my) iPad 1 is no longer support just two short years after its release, the Windows tablet will likely be supported by Windows 9, Windows 10 and possibly beyond. Think about it. If you purchased a Windows tablet computer in 2001 (Almost exactly 11 years ago to the day), when Windows XP first hit the market, your tablet would still be supported and it's likely that you could upgrade it to Windows 7 or even Windows 8 with no issues. In fact, it might run better with Windows 8 on it. So, for my $600, I could have a device that's supported for 10+ years instead of two. That's an easy decision for me to make.

And, since Windows is such a versatile platform and uses standard hardware, it's likely that you can run virtual machines on it with a Type 2 Hypervisor or dual boot it with Linux. You aren't limited to a single OS nor are you limited to a single function computer/game system that may well be obsoleted by its manufacturer in two years.*

The best of all worlds indeed.

I've used Windows 8 for a while now with no issues. It works well with all of my services, programs and idiosyncrasies. I haven't had a moment of trouble with it. Honestly.

It's almost as if Microsoft thought about the past and decided not to repeat its mistakes. They put real thought into the next generation of computing and what users really need to operate, to communicate and to transition seamlessly from home to work and back again.

If you've followed my column for long, you know that I didn't buy an Android tablet and I reluctantly purchased an Apple iPad 1 (mistake) but I'm looking forward to my brand new Windows tablet with Windows 8 on it. Yes, I am. I'm going to buy one and I'm going to love it.

What about you? Are you going to buy a Windows 8 tablet or opt for a different one? Would your employer's choice make a difference to you? Talk back and let me know.

*Yes, I'm still angry. No, I won't just get over it.

Thin laptops, including MacBook Air, meet eco-standard

An investigation of ultrathin laptops, including Apple's latest MacBook Air, has found they do conform to the EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) environmental standard. The investigation, which covered five laptops made by four companies, was started after Apple said in July it was withdrawing from the voluntary certification then reversed its position after an outcry from its customers.

The Cupertino-based computer maker never explained its initial reason for wanting to drop out of EPEAT, but the move came shortly after it refreshed its MacBook Air laptops. At the time there was considerable speculation Apple's decision was because the new laptops didn't conform to aspects of the EPEAT standard related to disassembly, upgrade and replacement of components.

As a result of the verification process, details of which were announced on Friday, no products have been removed from the EPEAT registry, said Sarah O'Brien, director of outreach and communications for EPEAT.

One of the issues in question was EPEAT section 4.4.2.1, which in part required that "the product is upgradeable with commonly available tools."The organization's verification process began with an attempt to clarify ambiguous wording in a couple of parts of its requirements, which are based on the IEEE 1680.1 environmental assessment standard for personal computers.

In determining what that meant, EPEAT decided that an upgrade doesn't necessarily require access to the inside of the computer.

"Products containing externally accessible ports such as a high performance serial bus or a USB are capable of being upgraded by adding a hard disk, DVD, floppy drive, memory and cards, and therefore conform to this criterion," EPEAT's product verification committee said in a clarification to the rule.

A "commonly available tool" was determined to be one that can be "purchased by any individual or business without restrictions and is readily available for purchase on the open market."

A second issue requiring clarification was the definition of the "ease and safety" disassembly requirement in two other parts of the EPEAT regulations. The committee decided that was something that had to be demonstrated rather than explained in the text of the document.

The verification process started wide but soon narrowed.

"In reviewing, we found a large number of products with clear disassembly instructions, then we looked at the uni-body group," said O'Brien. "There was a high risk of non-compliance."

Unibody refers to a new form of laptop manufacture in which the body of the computer is formed from a single piece of metal or plastic. The method makes the computers more compact, but has the possibility of making them more difficult to take apart and recycle.

So EPEAT decided to focus its attention on unibody laptops and selected five computers from Apple, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba.

Disassembly instructions were solicited from the manufacturers, the laptops were bought on the open market, and they were sent to an electronics test laboratory that would do the tests.

"They found they could disassemble all the laptops in at most 20 minutes and remove batteries in at most 3 minutes," said O'Brien. "The recommendation was that all five [laptops] be found in compliance."

Batteries had been a focus of the initial speculation on Apple. Early attempts to disassemble Macbook Air laptops revealed the batteries were glued into space rather that mounted—something that would enable the company to save a little internal space—and that was thought to fall afoul of EPEAT standards.
